It’s a busy time of year, but we’re squeezing in one more challenge at Cards in Envy for the next two weeks.   This time our theme is “Let it Snow”.  Any images depicting snow, snowflakes, snowmen, etc. are suitable for the challenge.  Just remember to keep your card A2 sized (4.25″ x 5.5″) and flat enough to be mailed at the regular first-class postage rate.

I have to confess that I was running short on time before I needed to present my design team sample, so instead of making a card with a big snowy scene like I really wanted to do, I’ve simply used the Christmas card that my family is sending out this year… which, I must admit, is a revisit of a card I made earlier this year.  I’ve made a few changes, mainly to the color scheme.  This time I’ve heat embossed the sentiment in silver to coordinate with the silver snowflake eyelet.  I’m sharing two photos here; the second one does a little better job of showing the silver shimmer mist that I sprayed on the ivory layer.  In real life, when the light catches it just right, it really glistens.

I actually did the Christmas cards in two different shades of blue because I didn’t have quite enough of each color to make all of the card bases I needed.  On the bright side, I did not need to buy any new materials right before Christmas to make the cards this year!  And it felt good to use a lot of those snowflake eyelets – I’ve had them for a very long time!

Shopping Our Stash also has the “Let it Snow” theme going on, so I’m going to enter this card into their challenge.

Cards in Envy - Very Vintage Christmas

Hello there!  The first Monday of the month brings a new challenge at Cards in Envy.  For the next two weeks, we’d like to see cards based on the theme of “Very Vintage Christmas”.  So long as it’s vintage looking and Christmassy, it’ll work.  Be sure that your card is A2 sized (4.25″ x 5.5″) and has no lumpy, bumpy embellishments more than 1/4″ thick.

Some people create vintage styled cards that are gorgeous.  Unfortunately for me, I am not one of them.  I’m just not comfortable with the style.  But that’s why this is called a “challenge”, so I forged on with it anyway.  None of my Christmas stamp images looked particularly vintage to me, so I browsed through my designer papers, and I found a print of sheet music for a song called “The Christmas Tree”.  I looked back over my Christmas tree stamps, and something about the sketchiness of my blueprint stamps seemed a bit vintage to me.  I decided to try combining the stamp with the designer paper.  Since the stamp image is nearly the size of a card front, I had the thought of stamping the image on the designer paper.  I gave the image some translucent color with colored pencils blended with odorless mineral spirits, and I sponged the edges of the paper to add to the vintage look.  I added a mat, tilted to give some extra visual interest, attached it to a base of textured cardstock, and ended up with a card that I think is OK.  It doesn’t show well in the photo, but the star was colored with a gold pencil.

Hello!  It’s time for a new challenge at Cards in Envy – where we make cards that fit in envelopes!  Cards for our challenges should be A2 sized (4.25″ x 5.5″) and have no lumpy, bumpy embellishments more than 1/4″ thick, so that the cards can be mailed at the standard first-class postage rate.

We’re getting ready for cooler weather with a challenge theme of “Put Some Extra Layers On”.  This can be depicted either by having a number of layers of cardstock or designer paper on your card, or by using images that show layers in some sort.  Be sure to check out the challenge blog to see what the rest of the design team has made!

For my card, I decided to let some designer paper do most of the work for me.  I’ve matted it with a coordinating solid color cardstock, and the card base serves as a mat for the main panel.  The layout comes from the current challenge at Freshly Made Sketches.

Cards in Envy - Gratitude

Hello there!  It’s the first Monday of the month, which means it’s time for a new challenge at Cards in Envy.  Our challenge theme for the next two weeks is Gratitude.  There are so many things in our lives for which we can be thankful – so make a card showing your thankfulness, and share it with us!  Keep in mind that cards for our challenges must be A2 sized (4.25″ x 5.5″) and must not have any thick embellishments that would prevent the card from being mailed at the standard first-class postage rate.

It’s been a long time since I made a starburst card, so I picked out some designer papers in colors that I felt represented the autumn season and went to work with them.  Since the papers had a lot of blue in them, I chose to stamp a bird in the circle element so I could color it to coordinate with the papers.  The sentiment is from a long-retired stamp set.

Cards in Envy - Trick or Treat

Hello, and welcome to another Monday!  Since it’s the third Monday of the month, it’s time for a new challenge at Cards in Envy.  For the next couple of weeks we’re getting into a Halloween mood by focusing on a theme of “Trick or Treat”.  Cards for this challenge should be A2 size (4.25″ x 5.5″) and flat enough to fit in an envelope for mailing.  Your card can be scary, cute, or anything in between, so long as it conveys the idea of trick or treating.

I’ve used alphabet stamps to spell out the sentiment for my card.  I didn’t have enough lower case “r”s for the whole phrase “trick or treat”, so I decided to mix upper case and lower case to make the words.  The bunny in the pumpkin and the “boo” quote balloon were both stamped on scrap cardstock.  I used markers to color the bunny image, then fussy cut it and the quote balloon.  They are attached with dimensional adhesive so they kind of float above the stamped sentiment.  The layout for this card comes from the current CAS(E) this Sketch! challenge.  I’m also entering this card into the Lawnscaping “Too Cute to Spook” challenge.

Cards in Envy - Creepy Crawlies

Hello!  It’s challenge introduction day at Cards in Envy!  We are starting to get into a Halloween mood with the theme of “Creepy Crawlies”.  Cards for this challenge should feature any kind of creepy creature that crawls or slithers.  Snakes, spiders, or any sort of bug would all be appropriate.  Be sure to make your card A2 sized (4.25″ x 5.5″) and thin enough to be mailed at the standard first class postage rate.

I personally am not a fan of crawly creepy stuff, so I wanted to keep my card as friendly-seeming as possible.  My stamp choices were pretty limited, but I pulled out a set of Halloween stamps that I bought a long time ago and used the spider from it.  I stamped the spider image several times, colored them, and then drew in the threads so it looked like they are all dangling.  I spelled out an encouraging sentiment with alphabet stamps, because I’m planning to include this card in my first shipment to Send a Smile 4 Kids.  Finally I matted the panel and attached it to a card base.

Cards in Envy - Colors of Fall

Hi there!  Today marks the start of another fun challenge at Cards in Envy:  Colors of Fall.  For the next few weeks, we want to see your cards using fall colors.  Just remember to keep your card A2 size (4.25″ x 5.5″) and flat enough to mail in an envelope at the standard first class postage rate.

I’ve used several different designer papers to convey the fall color scheme.  The orange leaves and sentiment were die cut from a very subtle polka dot print.  I cut the same shapes in chocolate brown and offset them a bit to add a shadow effect.  The layout for my card is from The Crooked Stamper Sketch Challenge.

Cards in Envy - Inspired by a Song

Hello there!  It’s time for a new challenge at Cards in Envy – where we make cards that fit in envelopes!  Cards for our challenges should be A2 sized (4.25″ x 5.5″) and have no lumpy, bumpy embellishments more than 1/4″ thick, so that the cards can be mailed at the standard first-class postage rate.  For the next two weeks, we’d like you to be inspired by a song.  Choose any song and make a card based upon it.

When my husband and I first started dating and commuting to work together, we used to listen to the oldies station on the radio.  One song that became a favorite of ours was “My Special Angel” by Bobby Helms.  I decided to choose that song for my inspiration for this challenge since this cute little angel stamp was almost begging to be used.  I die cut some fluffy-looking clouds for the angel to stand among.  I stamped the angel on a scrap piece of cardstock, colored him, fussy cut him out, and then attached him to the card.  There’s a bit of Wink of Stella glitter pen on his wings, which was hard to capture with the camera, so that’s why I have two photos of the card here.

Cards in Envy - Cute & Cuddly

Hi there! It’s Cards in Envy challenge introduction day! For the next two weeks we have a theme challenge of “Cute & Cuddly”.  Show us your A2 sized cards featuring any cute, cuddly animal.  Remember to keep your cards flat enough to fit in an envelope and be mailed at the first class postage rate.

I’ve loved cats and kittens ever since I was a little girl, so it seemed only natural to have a cat on my card for this challenge.  First I decided to use this week’s sketch from CAS Colours & Sketches (turned on its side) and chose some coordinating designer papers for the various elements of the card.  It was a great way to use up some scraps, and it makes the card eligible for the current challenge at CAS-ual Fridays.  I stamped the cat bed onto one scrap of designer paper, fussy cut it, and attached it to the focal panel.  I stamped the cat twice onto a scrap of grey paper.  I cut one cat out entirely, and cut only the head of the other.  That way I was able to adhere the second head (with a couple cardstock shims behind it) separately to give some dimension to my card.  The circle with the cat was attached with dimensional adhesive.  A coordinating sentiment finished the card.

Hello!  It’s time for a new challenge at Cards in Envy – where we make cards that fit in envelopes!  Cards for our challenges should be A2 sized (4.25″ x 5.5″) and have no lumpy, bumpy embellishments more than 1/4″ thick, so that the cards can be mailed at the standard first-class postage rate.  For the next two weeks, we’re focusing on the theme of Birthday Party.  It promises to bring a load of fun party cards!

I’m not sure yet who the eventual recipient of my card will be, so I kept it gender-neutral and suitable for a person of any age.  The layout is taken from the Freshly Made Sketches challenge that closes later today.  The coordinating designer papers in the package made it easy to match the balloons to the colors in the banner element.  To give some dimension to the balloons, I’ve used a shim of scrap cardstock behind the yellow balloon and dimensional adhesive behind the blue one.

Hello there!  What better way to cool off in the summer heat of mid-July than to think of Christmas?  That’s what the Cards in Envy design team has planned for the next couple of weeks.  Our current challenge theme is “Christmas in July”.

I have a confession to make about my card for this challenge.  It’s the card design that my family sent out to our friends and family last Christmas.  Last week when my sample card was due in to the design team, my family was getting ready to go out of town to visit my husband’s parents, so I knew I had to do something quick and easy.  I always make a few extra Christmas cards “just in case” and then donate any remaining ones to Operation Write Home.  I just happened to have a couple left over, and I looked through both my computer’s database and my blog and realized I never shared the card online.  So I did the quickest and easiest thing possible – I snapped a few photos of one of my leftover cards and chose the best photo to use here.  My card was heavily inspired by this one at Splitcoaststampers.com.  I’ve changed the colors and sentiment, stretched the card into a portrait-oriented rectangle, and used just one little rhinestone as an embellishment.

Cards in Envy - Just Beachy

Hello there!  It’s the first Monday of the month, which means it’s time for a new challenge at Cards in Envy!  Our theme for the next two weeks is “Just Beachy”.  Make a card depicting whatever says “beach” to you – an ocean scene, beach balls, starfish, anything that you think of when you think of going to the beach.  Remember, though, that the main requirement for Cards in Envy challenges is that your card must be A2 sized and not have any lumpy, bumpy embellishments that could push it over the first class postage rate.

I’ve used the current CAS(E) this Sketch! layout for my card.  I paired some watery-looking designer paper with a lightly speckled cardstock that reminds me of sand on the beach.  I stamped various seashells and a sand dollar on scraps of speckled cardstock, fussy cut them, and arranged them on the front of the card.  The largest shell is raised up with cardstock shims to add a little dimension to the card.  A simple sentiment finishes off the card and makes it a suitable addition to the cards I’m compiling to send to Operation Write Home by the end of the month.  The beachy theme also makes this card suitable for the current Paper Players challenge.

Cards in Envy - Red, White AND Blue

Hello!  Here in the United States, Flag Day was yesterday, and the Fourth of July is coming up soon, so at Cards in Envy we’re getting into the spirit with a Red, White, AND Blue color challenge.  Cards made for this challenge don’t need to be of a patriotic theme, but they do have to feature those three colors.

I will admit that my brain wasn’t in one of its most creative modes when I was figuring out what to make for this challenge.  So I tweaked the basic idea of a card I’d made last year and went with that.  It’s a quick and easy design with some bold, eye-catching blocks of color.  The sentiment makes this a great any occasion card to include in the box I’m filling for Operation Write Home.

Cards in Envy - Girls, Girls, Girls

Hello there, and welcome!  Today marks the beginning of a new challenge at Cards in Envy.  We’re following up our “Hey Dude!” challenge with “Girls, Girls, Girls”.  Cards for this challenge should be A2 sized (4.25″ x 5.5″) and be thin enough to be mailed at the standard postage rate – and be suitable to send to a girl of any age.

Even though Operation Write Home will stop accepting cards after August 1, 2015, I’m still working on filling up a box to send them in July.  So I decided to make a “miss you” themed card that one of our military men or women could send home to their daughter.  I think this little girl image is really cute.  When she’s colored with dark hair, she reminds me of Boo from the movie “Monsters, Inc.”  OK, so the eyes are really different, but the hair style is exactly the same.  I used the current Splitcoaststampers.com sketch challenge for layout inspiration, turning the sketch on its side to give me more space for the sentiment.  It felt good to use up a few scraps of some of my oldest Basic Grey papers for the banners.

I have to confess that I wasn’t feeling very creative when I was trying to make my sample card for this challenge, so I decided to browse through the sketch library on the OWH Stars & Stamps blog.  I found an older one that looked like it would work well with designer papers.  So I chose it and let the designer papers do most of the creative work for me.  Once I chose the papers, it was pretty simple to put it all together.  The dew drop embellishments are a little thicker than what I normally use on cards, but because they are less than 1/4″ thick they still fit the CIE challenge requirements.
