Well hi there!  It’s color challenge week at CAS Colours & Sketches.

I decided to go floral with the colors. I used just part of one of my newest stamps because the stamp itself is a whopping seven inches long.  The yellow leaves are a little different, but I thought about how the leaves on my balloon flowers turn yellow after we get frosty fall weather so I went with it even though the stamped blossoms aren’t balloon flower blossoms.

I kept the current AAA Cards challenge in my mind as I was working on the layout for this card.  I couldn’t think of a song to tie into it, though.

Hello there!  It’s sketch challenge week at CAS Colours & Sketches and I think we have a good one for you this time.

The one rectangular area of the sketch looked to me like an image panel.  It took me a little while to choose what to put in it.  I finally decided on this cute otter image and started pulling out supplies for the rest of the card – and was happily surprised to find this same otter, already stamped and colored (except for the bow), in my file folder with the blue cardstock and watery designer paper!  So I colored the bow to match and carefully fussy cut the otter.  I added some stamped waves to the designer paper.  Although the otter image is actually from a Christmas themed stamp set, it works perfectly well with the birthday sentiment too!

Greetings!  It’s time for another color challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches.

This week’s colors suggested doing something from nature, so after browsing through my materials, I decided to try combining stenciling with fussy cutting.  In order to keep my card very clean and simple in style, I stenciled the flowers stems and leaves directly onto the card base.  (I figured if I messed it up too badly, I could still cut it down to a card front size and mat it onto a different card base.)  I’ve had this designer paper for years and thought the colors matched well to the challenge colors, so I used the stencil to trace the blossoms onto the paper and then fussy cut them out.  To keep my tracing lines from showing on the card, I flipped the stencil and the paper over and traced the outlines on the back of the paper.  I also traced the two larger blossoms again on a scrap of cardstock so I could use those as shims behind the designer paper to give the blossoms a little bit of dimension.  I stamped the sentiment before I glued the blossoms to the card front.  I didn’t want to risk assembling the whole card and then smudging the sentiment!

Hello!   July has five Tuesdays, and that means it’s time for a double challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches!  This week we’re asking our challenge participants to combine the given colors with the given sketch.

The colors made me think of flowers and Christmas, and in my opinion the best way to combine those two thoughts is with a poinsettia.  I’ve used a digital image and colored it with Copic markers before carefully cutting it out.  I decided to make the green colors the focus of the card, using the lighter green for the focal panel and the darker green to ink the swirls and the sentiment.  I briefly considered using a rose pink card base but the card looked more clean and simple in style with an ivory base to match the ivory sentiment panel.  I squashed the shape of the card into a landscape oriented rectangle so I’d have more room for the sentiment, and flipped the sketch mirror-image.

Hello!  It’s time for another color challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches.

There’s a saying that goes “the third time’s the charm” and that proved true for me in making this week’s card.  I opted to go with a graphic design.  On my first attempt I didn’t mask my stencil well enough and got ink where it wasn’t supposed to be.  I opted for something completely different on my second try and didn’t like the way that ended up.  The third time, I used a different stencil.  Some time ago I made a stencil by cutting a few circles of various sizes from a piece of acetate.  I brushed the two lighter colors from the color combination into the circles.  Then I stamped a sentiment in the darkest color and attached the card front to a card base in the same navy blue.  I added a couple of enamel dots to finish the card.

Hello there!  It’s time for a new challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches and this week we have some pretty pastel colors to play with. The colors practically shouted “Do a floral card!” so that’s the direction I took with them.  I pulled out an oldie-but-goodie stamp set that has stamps to create the different layers and shading effects.  To get the two shades of green for the foliage, I stamped the image off on scrap paper once before applying the stamp to the image panel.  Then I selectively inked the rubber again and stamped it over top the first impression.  I originally planned to just adhere the image panel directly to the card base, but that seemed a little too plain, so I decided to add a very narrow mat of green.  It’s really difficult to tell in the photo, but I used shimmery cardstock for the image panel, so in real life the card has a hint of sparkle to it.  The only color in the challenge trio that I actually own is the darker pink, so I substituted the closest colors I have to the lighter pink and the green.

I’m going to enter this into the current challenge at AAA Cards, too.

Hello there!  It’s the fourth Tuesday of the month, which means it’s sketch challenge time again at CAS Colours & Sketches.  This one is pretty unique and I hope our challenge participants will have fun with it.

I was looking through some of my wood-mounted stamps and rediscovered this one.  The three daffodils made me think of the three oval elements of the sketch.  I colored them with colored pencils blended with odorless mineral spirits.  The daffodil image lent itself pretty well to one of our previous CC&S color challenges, too.  The two yellows are really not that different when put next to each other, but I tried to make each of them stand out on the different parts of the blossoms.  When it came to matching cardstock for the card base, Certainly Celery ended up being a better match to my coloring job than Pear Pizzazz.  I didn’t have an octagonal die that matched exactly to the sketch and I didn’t feel like doing the measuring to make sure I cut all the corners the same, so I took the easy way out by using a punch to nip off the corners of the focal panel to give me the octagonal shape.

Hello!  I hope your week has gotten off to a good start.  After a rainy weekend, it’s nice to finally see some sunshine this morning.

It’s Tuesday, which means it’s time for a new challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches.  This week is a sketch challenge and I’ll admit I was kind of stumped by it at first.  I don’t have any dies that match well to the rounded shape in the sketch, so I browsed through my stamps.  I’m not exactly sure why this stamp set beckoned to me because the shapes don’t quite match up proportionally to the sketch elements, but it’s such a cute set of stamps that I decided to give it a go anyway.  I stamped the toast slices and the muffin on white cardstock, colored them, and fussy cut them.  My cat thought he could help me cut by jumping up on my desk and head bumping my hand, which made me accidentally cut off an arm on one of the pieces of toast, so I decided to just go ahead and cut off all the arms and legs that are part of the toast images.  They were much easier to cut that way, anyway.  I stamped the toaster on some silver brushed metallic cardstock to make it look like stainless steel and fussy cut it, too.  I searched through my designer papers and found a very old one that had a sort of marble-y kitchen countertop vibe to it, and I chose that for the rectangular part of the sketch.  I held up the various pieces of the card to white cardstock but that seemed a little too bland for the card base, so I looked through my colored cardstocks and picked a light yellow with a subtle linen texture.  The yellow adds some cheer and seemed to coordinate better with the sketch elements than other colors of cardstock.

Well hello there!  It’s the first Tuesday of the month, which means we have a new hostess of the month over at CAS Colours & Sketches!  YoonYoung has planned some fun things for us this time, and she’s starting us off with a really nice pastel color challenge.

When I was trying to decide what to make for this challenge, the idea of using kraft with the challenge colors stuck in my head.  But none of my image stamps really seemed “right” to use with that combination.  I finally decided to use the colors for a sentiment and make that the focal point of the card.  I die cut the word “hello” from a panel slightly smaller than a card front.  I adhered scraps of cardstock in the challenge colors to the card base so that they would show through the die cut word.  I originally planned to use dimensional adhesive to pop up the front panel from the card base, but quickly realized that would be a pain to use with the insides of the “e” and the “o”, so I attached the panel directly to the card base and then glued the insides of the letters in place.  I opted not to include the inner loops of the “h” and the “l”s – that was too fiddly even for me, LOL!

Hello!  It’s time for one last challenge for the month of May at CAS Colours & Sketches.  This time it’s a very simple sketch that puts focus on the sentiment.

After looking through my stamps and dies, I chose to go out of season and make a Christmas card, splitting up the “Merry Christmas” sentiment with a die and a stamp.  I cut the “merry” twice from red cardstock so that I could stack the two diecuts for dimension.  After I placed them on the card front, I stamped the word “Christmas”.  It’s actually from a stamp that says “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year” but I was able to ink up just the one word. I like the contrast of the curly, scripty “merry” and the simple, clean lines of “Christmas”.  I chose linen textured cardstock for the card front to give some subtle visual interest (which unfortunately is probably too subtle to see in the photo).  For the embellishments, I chose some shiny star-shaped brads that I’ve had for years; I didn’t have enough gold or silver ones so I used copper.   I used dimensional adhesive to attach the card front to the card base, partly for a little extra interest and partly to accommodate the prongs of the brads.  I considered using a green card base to bring out more of that color, but the card didn’t look as CAS as with a white base.

Hello there!  It’s time for another color challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches.  We have some bright, cheery colors to work with this week.

I kind of dove into the “cheer” aspect of the colors and made a birthday card.  I started by cutting the white panel to size.  Then I stamped the sentiment at the bottom, which I thought paired well with the image stamps I chose.  Next I stamped the “wax” part of the candles.  For the flames, I inked the stamp first with yellow, and then touched my orange ink pad to the stamp just enough to grab a little of the orange color before pressing it onto the cardstock.  I decided to offset the panel when I mounted it to the card base.

I don’t think it’s one of my better cards, but it is definitely clean and simple in style, with minimal layers and lots of open space!

Hello!  It’s the second Tuesday of the month, which means it’s sketch challenge time at CAS Colours & Sketches.  Other shapes can be substituted for the sunshine element drawn on the sketch, but we would like for you to keep the triangular areas as triangles.

I’ve flipped the sketch mirror image for my card because I wanted to use this cute bunny stamp and he looked better facing the opposite direction from the way the sketch was drawn.  I chose some designer paper that had some neutral colors in it that would be easy to match to the base cardstock and to color for the bunny.  I stamped the bunny on a scrap of white cardstock, colored him, cut him out, and attached him to the card with dimensional adhesive so the card wouldn’t feel quite so flat.

Hello!  I’m the challenge hostess at CAS Colours & Sketches for the month of May.  I’m looking forward to seeing what our challenge participants make with the challenges I’ve created!

As usual, we’re starting off the month with a color challenge.  I’ve used the three colors from the combination to stamp a rose and some leaves, using generational stamping to get the different shades of green and marigold.  (I don’t actually own any Mango Melody cardstock or ink, so I’ve used a long-retired In Color called Marigold Morning as a close substitute.)  I stamped the images on a scrap of white cardstock, fussy cut them, and then assembled them together.  I used dimensional adhesive to attach the flower to the card.  The layout for my card is my take on a recent Freshly Made Sketches challenge; unfortunately for me, that challenge has already ended so I can’t link my card there.  The white cardstock background has a subtle linen texture that is very hard to capture in photos, but it does add extra visual interest to the card.

Hello hello!  It’s Timeless Tuesday at CAS Colours and Sketches, where we have a double challenge for you!  This week we’d like you to create a card using the provided color palette and sketch.

I decided to use the sky blue in the color combination as a sky, but I didn’t want to use plain cardstock, so I turned to my patterned papers and chose a bitty polka-dot design.  For the other two colors, I stamped two birds onto a scrap of white cardstock and colored each bird a different color.  I stamped a line for the birds to “perch” upon and drew in their legs, because fussy cutting around the legs is too fussy for me, LOL.  I also stamped the sentiment balloon on a scrap of cardstock and fussy cut that to add to the sketch.  Because of the way I positioned the speech balloon, I’ve actually used a “flipped upside down” version of the sketch.  I gave the birds a little dimension by adding a couple of scrap cardstock shims beneath them before gluing them into place on the card.

Another Tuesday, another CAS Colours & Sketches challenge!  🙂  This week we have a take on some bright primary colors.

I tossed a few ideas around in my head, looked through my computer files at cards I made in the past, and checked out a few other current challenges before deciding what to do for my card this week.  It ended up being a mashup of this week’s CAS(E) this Sketch! challenge, squashed into a landscape-oriented rectangle, and a card I’d made in 2012.  I used the same stamps I’d used on my previous card and fit them into the CTS sketch, using the CC&S colors.  Once I got it all figured out, the card came together pretty easily.  It’s hard to tell in the photo, but the red block of cardstock at the top of the card has a slight linen texture.
