Over the years, I’ve come to learn that part of crafting is realizing that sometimes you’re going to make things you think are pretty awesome, and sometimes, well, the project just doesn’t turn out as well as you’d hoped it would.
Today’s card belongs, in my opinion, to the latter scenario. When the OWH Stars & Stamps sketch was introduced last Sunday, I looked at it and felt it was kind of fiddly with a lot of smallish pieces and parts, so I thought I’d take a pass on it. On Wednesday this week’s Inkspirational challenge was presented. This time they have provided a photo for inspiration. I have a difficult time with photo inspiration challenges to begin with, and this one really had me stumped. But I peeked back at the Stars & Stamps sketch again. The sketch made me think of a window, and the inspiration photo had a window. I pulled out some designer paper that had flowers in colors similar to the ones in the inspiration photo, and got to work. So here it is, all put together:
Here are the inspiration photo and the sketch:
I’m just having a hard time liking this one. I feel like the designer papers are competing against each other too much, or something. And I’m wondering if I should have attached the heart with dimensional adhesive to give it a little more visual separation from the background.
Oh well. It isn’t the worst looking card I’ve ever created, LOL! I think it’s still fine to be sent to OWH. And maybe I’ll like my next card better.
Supplies:
Stamps: Short & Sweet (Stampin’ Up)
Cardstock: Riding Hood Red (SU); designer papers from Hello, Luscious 6″ x 6″ paper pad (Basic Grey)
Ink: Riding Hood Red (SU)
Other: Riding Hood Red pleated satin ribbon (SU); Heart #2 die (Sizzix)

I think it’s GORGEOUS! I always think it’s hilarious when people love a card that I absolutely hate. I’ve won challenges with cards I hate. So now, anytime I make a card and hate it, my DH tells me I better enter it into a billion challenges, lol! 😉 I think the patterns are fine, I think that the one thing that would make this card better is for that heart to be popped up and maybe have some dark inking around it or a dark mat behind it. Please don’t take offense–just agreeing with you about the popping up thing. ;D Thanks SO MUCH for joining us at Inkspirational! HUGS and happy weekend! Can’t wait to see what you make for us next week! 🙂
Hi Patricia, well I like your card very much. After reading your story, I can see the window with flowers outside and the background paper being wallpaper. I was attracted to your card because, from my interest in quilting, your card looks like a quilted wallhanging using complementary fabrics and an appliqued heart. I think you made a very pretty card and it will be a great card for OWH!
Patricia, I so know what you mean but this card is beautiful and the mix of papers is just right-you have the flower pattern that is busy in the windows with the plain heart in the centre-so good that you left the heart plain, it works. Then the paper on the outside is plainer than the flower paper-so it all really does go together. I love how you describe how this came together and I am always making cards that I don’t like but post them anyway as we can’t always like what we do!
Thanks for joining us at Inkspirational and hope to see you next week.
Patricia, I think this card is great! I think the papers go together just fine. I understand how you feel, though, because I feel like I have a difficult time putting patterned papers together too. But this is definitely OWH quality!
Patricia I love this card! I think the papers are beautiful together and the OWH sketch worked perfectly for our photo inspiration. Thank you for joining us at Inkspirational this week! 🙂
No, you are wrong – the papers don’t compete. They give a rich effect, like a Moorish palace ( or something!) I love this card.
Thanks for joining us at Inkspirational Challenges. Marina
Patricia; That is a card I wish I had made! I love it!!! And the ribbon… *wow* Thank you for joining us at Inkspirational this week, hope to see you again very soon 🙂
We’re our own worst critics Patricia – your card is lovely! I don’t think the papers compete as you have enough of a border between them – plus you had the good sense to choose a smaller background paper plus the more busy flowery paper! I would agree with you that popping up the heart might have been a good option – perhaps you could make another heart and pop it up over the top?
You did a wonderful job with both the sketch layout and inspiration photo – despite them both being real challenges for you, kudos for hanging in there and creating a lovely card despite your reservations!
Thanks so much for playing along with us at Inkspirational & I hope you join us again very soon! Ruth x
