Hello!  We’re back to a sketch week at CAS Colours & Sketches.

I admit that the sketch looked a little complicated to me at first.  Then Beverley, our April challenge hostess, explained that the scalloped area at the top doesn’t necessarily have to be scallops, and that the rectangular element doesn’t necessarily need to be a rectangle, so long as we keep the two trios of elements.  Then I started seeing more ideas for the sketch.  I thought it would be fun to use a speech balloon for the scalloped area and have an animal of some sort as the “speaker”.  After all the recent talk about the Starbucks Unicorn Frappucino (which no, I did not try, I’m just not into the whole Starbucks thing) I guess I had unicorns in the back of my mind, so I chose to make a unicorn birthday card that I can include in my next shipment to Send a Smile 4 Kids.  I stamped the unicorn on shimmery cardstock, colored the horn, mane, hooves, and tail, and fussy cut it to add to the card.  Luckily I had a stamp that’s a trio of tiny stars; it worked perfectly to easily add in that detail of the sketch directly onto the card base.  I did add a bit of color to the stars to help set them off from the card base.  The speech balloon reminds me of a big fluffy cloud.  I think the shades of pink and the unicorn would delight most any little girl.

Hello!  Today’s post is just a quick one to show off a rather clean and simple card using the current sketch at Freshly Made Sketches.  Well, actually, if you look carefully at the curved area, I’ve used the mirror image of the sketch.  I had an embossed, curved piece of cardstock left over from another card I’d made some time ago, so all I needed to do with it was attach it to the card base and trim it down (it was originally about 5″ wide).  The sentiment fit nicely in the “dip” of the curve.  In an attempt to use some products I’ve had stashed around here for a long time, I’ve added some Prima flowers and glued Dew Drops in place for the centers of the flowers.  I’m not sure why the color is coming off of the Dew Drops but I like the variegated look it gives.  The soft color scheme and the flowers make me feel that the card also fits into the theme for the current challenge at AAA Cards so I’ll enter it there, too.

Hello!  This week is sketch week at CAS Colours & Sketches, and I think this week’s sketch is a very sweet and simple one.

I have to confess that my post for today is late because this is my second take for my card.  I had my first idea all figured out in my head last night, using a sentiment stamp to fill in the focal panel.  The stamp I had in mind was from a set I’d never used before.  I tried it with two different types of ink and cleaned the stamp well but I just couldn’t get a good, clear, crisp image with it.  Lesson learned – just because a stamp set is inexpensive, it doesn’t mean it’s a good buy.  🙁  After about an hour of trying to figure out a work-around and browsing online for challenge ideas that I could combine with the sketch, I decided I should give up for the night and go to sleep.

So, this morning I went back to the proverbial drawing board.  I looked through some of my older stamp sets and settled on this sweet little one that combines a sentiment with an image.  I had a small background stamp that coordinated with it, and I felt that the colors from this week’s Paper Players challenge would work well with this new idea.  I hadn’t planned to mat the long narrow rectangular strip, but when I held the green to the card base, there wasn’t much contrast and it didn’t look so great.  The plum mat was definitely an improvement.  And I got to use a few more of the tiny brads and Prima flowers I’ve collected over the years.  I don’t know if it shows well in the photo, but the card base is textured cardstock.

Greetings!  It’s time for another color challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches.

I hadn’t used this floral image for a while, and I thought it would work well with the challenge colors.  I stamped off the different layers of the bloom to get the various shades of purple.  The sentiment is stamped with the full strength color.  For the subtle background shown in the sketch, I decided to splatter some yellow ink.  Putting the panel on a yellow card base helps to highlight that color.  I’ve combined the color challenge with the most recent layout from CAS(E) this Sketch!  However, because of the orientation of the flower, it looked better to use the mirror image of the sketch.

Christmas Card Throwdown - April theme challenge

Hello there, and happy Saturday to you!  It’s time for another theme challenge at Christmas Card Throwdown.  This time we’re looking for Christmasy or wintry cards that depict musical notation in one way or another.

It didn’t take me long to figure out what to do for this challenge.  I knew I had this designer paper with holiday songs, and I thought it would go well with my little tweeting wintry birdies.  I turned the sketch from CAS Colours & Sketches on its side, enlarged the side borders so more of the designer paper would show, and rotated the sentiment banner.  I stamped the birds on a scrap of white cardstock, colored them, fussy cut them, and glued them in place on the image panel.
