During August I was thinking of ways to try to make my blogging more fun and hopefully more interesting for my readers.  I decided I’d try occasional “themes” on different days of the month.  Keep tuned in throughout the month to see what’s going to be new here!  🙂

I felt that the first day of a new month was a good time to show off new-to-me techniques.  On today’s card I used a technique that I just tried for the first time a few days ago.  It’s called Wax Paper Cuttlebug Resist.  It’s pretty simple:  Put a piece of wax paper in an embossing folder, and run it through your Cuttlebug/Big Kick/Big Shot/similar machine.  Take the embossed wax paper out of the folder. Set the folder aside and layer the wax paper between two pieces of glossy cardstock (glossy sides touching the wax paper).  Carefully iron the cardstock/wax paper “sandwich”.  Yes, that’s right, I actually said “iron”.  LOL  I put the cardstock between layers of a folded dish towel when I iron it so nothing gets scorched. The heat will transfer the wax onto the glossy cardstock.  Then, after the cardstock has cooled, use a sponge to adhere dye ink to the design on the cardstock.  You can use one color or multiple colors.  You could also try brayering the ink onto the cardstock.  The wax will resist the ink.  You may want to buff off excess ink with a tissue or a paper towel.  Then, you can use the cardstock with its lovely design as you wish on your project – either as a background, or cut into a smaller shape for an embellishment, or whatever your imagination comes up with!

This technique was one of the Splitcoaststampers Virtual Stamp Night challenges last weekend, and here’s the card I made for the challenge.  The scalloped border panels are my Wax Paper Cuttlebug Resist pieces.  I used two colors of ink on them.  I chose the sympathy sentiment just so I could have a sympathy card on hand in case I need one suddenly.  The layout is a Lizzie Anne Designs sketch challenge sketch from several months ago.

I finally had a chance to try this week’s sketch challenge from Lizzie Anne Designs.  I used a lot of retired products on this card, from the stamp set to the designer papers to the ribbon.  To make the scalloped edge on the striped paper, I popped the alignment guide off my corner rounder punch and used the punch without it. I have to admit I’m happy with the finished product.

Really, there isn’t much to say about today’s card.  It’s my rendition of this week’s Lizzie Anne Designs sketch challenge.  Something about it makes me think “older lady”, like you’d send this to your 70-year-old aunt or somebody like that.  I don’t know.  What do you think?

Hi there!  If you’re here for the Lizzie Anne Designs Monthly Mix Blog Hop, thanks for peeking in!  I hope you’ll like what you see and come back again, and that you’ve been enjoying seeing what the other Monthly Mix Club members have been creating.  Even if you’re not here for the blog hop, thanks for coming by!

For today’s card I used stamps from the June Monthly Mix set, Life is Good, and the layout for this past week’s Lizzie Anne Designs sketch challenge.  This is one of the simplest cards I’ve made in a while. Can you believe I didn’t use *any* embellishments? No ribbon, no half pearls, no brads, no Shimmerz, no buttons – nothing.  I didn’t even use Nestabilities.  It’s been a while since I’ve done anything like that!  But I like it.  Then again, I like just about anything with butterflies.  🙂

This is the card I alluded to one day last week.  Three different patterns, fairly bright colors – definitely not my usual thing.  But in a way I sort of like it.

I got the slightly variegated effect on the word “friends” by sponging three different colors of ink onto the stamp.  The Melon Mambo and Rich Razzleberry inks ended up overpowering the Crushed Curry, but oh well.  The layout is a Lizzie Anne Designs sketch challenge from a few weeks ago that I finally got around to doing.

So, what do *you* think?  Too bright?  Too busy?  Too ugly, lol?

I think my creative spirit from last month went out the window a few days ago.  Today’s card is all right for a quick and easy card, I suppose, but I don’t consider it to be one of my better creations.

This one uses Lizzie Anne Designs weekly sketch #136 for the layout.  I thought the diagonal lines were cool.  I used a narrow strip of designer paper to set a monochromatic color scheme.  The cupcake frosting is painted with Shimmerz, but unfortunately the photo doesn’t show that very well.

Happy birthday today to my sister!  I won’t embarrass her by saying how old she is… but I have to say, no matter how old she gets, I’ll still be younger!  🙂

Today’s card is the one my family is sending her.  I used this week’s Lizzie Anne Designs sketch challenge for the layout.  The extra twist for the challenge was to use Nestabilities in a creative way to frame the main image.  Well, I don’t consider this to be particularly creative, but I used two different shapes – a petite oval for the image panel itself, layered on one of the shapes from the Labels Six dies.  I made this card 5.5″ square to accommodate the Nesties and the sentiment.  The sentiment stamp is actually set up in one long line, but I broke up the sentences into two lines.

I hope my sister enjoys a day as special as she is (and I don’t mean “special” in the short bus way)!

Today’s card uses the same Lizzie Anne Designs sketch challenge layout as the card I posted last Thursday, but I used the mirror image of the sketch.  I didn’t want the shark to look like he was swimming off the edge of the card.  I realized as I was making the card that this is the first time I’ve used Stampin’ Up’s Pacific Point cardstock.  Why haven’t I used that color before?!?  (This is where you imagine me imitating Homer Simpson saying “DOH!”) I really like it with the black and white and grey here.

I kept CAS-tastic challenge #12 in the back of my mind as I was creating this.  The challenge requirements were to use at least three of the following things to keep it SIMPLE:  Stamped (or digital) image; Inked edges; Masking; Paper piercing; Lace; Embossing.  The shark is my stamped image (kind of obvious, huh), I inked the edges of the shark image panel with black ink, and the long Pacific Point panel is dry embossed with the Cuttlebug “Spots & Dots” folder.  The embossing made the card eligible for the CAS weekly challenge at Splitcoaststampers.

This is going to be a birthday card.  The sentiment inside reads, “Have a KILLER birthday!”  I thought with the image it’s pretty cute!

Once again, it’s time for the Lizzie Anne Designs Monthly Mix Blog Hop.  This is an exciting week over at Lizzie Anne Designs!  They are celebrating their anniversary with a sale any sane rubber stamper won’t want to miss!

Wait a minute… who said rubber stampers were sane in the first place?  LOL  Just joking around.  But I know a few of my family members would probably question my own sanity at times.

Anyway…

Today’s card uses stamps from the July Monthly Mix, “Simply Sweet”.   I colored the image with Prismacolor pencils and odorless mineral spirits, which is a technique I haven’t done for a long time.  The color scheme is based on this week’s color challenge at Splitcoaststampers but I had to make a couple small modifications to it.  I used an old Stampin’ Up background stamp on the blue cardstock to keep it from looking so plain. The layout is this week’s Lizzie Anne Designs sketch challenge

Thanks for visiting my blog today!

krafty birthday to you...

… no, that just doesn’t have the same appeal as the familiar birthday song.  Oh well.

I combined a couple of challenges for today’s card.  I was still in the kraft mood and decided to do another card for the CAS-tastic challenge.  This time I followed the layout for the Lizzie Anne Designs weekly sketch challenge, which was intended to be “monochromatic with a tiny pop of color”.  So I used chocolate chip ink and ribbon to keep the monochromatic scheme, and added just a touch of coral pink with the cupcake wrapper, the candle and the button.  I used Shimmerz on the cupcake icing to give a little extra pizazz.  The card is a unique size – 3″ x 5.5″.

So, here it is.  Hope you like it!

I have to say I really enjoyed making today’s card.  One of my friends had a baby boy recently, and this is the card my family sent to them.  It just makes my heart happy to know how excited they are to have this new addition to their family, and how much that little guy is truly loved by his parents and big sister.

I had a hard time deciding exactly which papers from the Basic Grey Oh Baby! Boy collection to use, but I finally narrowed it down to these four.  That collection has so many great designs in it.  I used Lizzie Anne Designs sketch challenge #130 for the layout and stamps from the Lizzie Anne Designs May 2010 Monthly Mix set, “Dream Big”.  I chose to paper piece the birds, the moon and the hanging star from scraps of the Basic Grey papers instead of coloring the image by hand.

Best wishes to my friend’s family!

Hi there!  Today’s card is the one my family will be giving my dad and my father in law for Father’s Day.  (No, they don’t have to share the card, LOL!  I made two.)  I used stamps from two different Lizzie Anne Designs Monthly Mix sets.  I totally love the tree with the bench image from Singing in the Rain.  I don’t know how well it shows in the photo, but in the back of the bench there’s a tiny heart.  (I’ve colored it in.)  How cute is that?!?  The image makes me think of my dad and how he enjoyed sitting in his lawn chair in the shade of the pecan trees at the house where I grew up.  The sentiment I used is from the Dream Big set.  I stepped back in the past for the layout – it’s LAD sketch challenge #78, with the layers matted.

If you’re visiting from the Lizzie Anne Designs Monthly Mix Blog Hop, I hope you’ve been having fun seeing all the terrific creations, and that you’ll come back to visit my blog again.

My dad’s birthday was yesterday, so I sent a card to him from our family.  It took me a while to decide what to make for him.  Usually I do something kind of serious and formal and masculine looking, with a tree or some such.  This year I decided to go a little more lighthearted.  I used Lizzie Anne Designs sketch challenge 129.  This was a challenge for me because I’m not used to making one-layer cards.  For the confetti, I inked just a portion of the swirl stamp from the Party Animals set.  I added a little splash of color by paper piecing the gift for the focal point and by matting the two small panels.

Dad told me on the phone that he liked his card, so I suppose I can say “mission accomplished”.  🙂  I hope he enjoys many more happy years!

My younger son decided to join a soccer rec league team for the first time this spring.  He had fun, he learned a lot about the game, and I’m proud to say that his coaches really praised his determination, efforts and emerging skills.  Unfortunately the team won only two games, but there were several very close losses too.  Their record didn’t reflect how hard the team worked together.

The season ended last weekend.  My son gave thank you cards to his coaches, and he helped me choose the images and papers for the cards.  The team wore navy jerseys with black shorts, so that determined the color scheme we chose.  I used Lizzie Anne Designs sketch challenge #128 for the layout.  The players chose the name “Tsunamis” for their team.  I printed the name using Microsoft Word rather than trying to stamp it.

Even though my son claims he doesn’t plan to play soccer again, I’m willing to wait and see if he changes his mind about that.

I feel like I’ve been making so many birthday cards lately that I’m having a hard time coming up with something original to say about them in my blog posts.

Today’s card is on its way to my father-in-law.  It uses this week’s Lizzie Anne Designs sketch challenge and stamps from two different LAD sets.  I drew in the grass by hand, and I sewed the button onto the ribbon before attaching the ribbon to the card.

I hope my father-in-law likes his card and has a wonderful birthday!
