I guess I’m subconsciously stuck on the idea of butterflies on birthday cards right now.  I didn’t think about it until I started writing this post, but today’s card is the second birthday card featuring butterflies I’ve sent out in the last two weeks.

I’ve had the Sizzix/Stampin’ Up Beautiful Wings die for a while now, but hadn’t used it yet, and when I spotted it on my desk early last week it started seeming like it was calling out to me… “use me… soon… please!”  LOL  So I finally put it to use for this card.  The layout is Lizzie Anne Designs Sketch Challenge #126.  I slightly folded the largest butterfly and glued just the body of it down to the card, so there’s a bit of a 3-D effect going on there.  There isn’t much stamping here – only the sentiment – but I’m pleased with the final result.

Other: Beautiful Wings die (Stampin’ Up)

Today’s card combines several challenges – Lizzie Anne Designs Sketch Challenge #120, Splitcoaststampers Clean & Simple Challenge 67, and Splitcoaststampers Color Challenge 268.  I threw this card together fairly quickly a few days ago and sent it out to my husband’s brother for his birthday.  I hope he liked it and that he enjoyed his special day.

The ribbon treatment was pretty easy.  I took piece of ribbon and cut a “v” shape into the ends.  Then I took another piece, about 2″ long.  I put a piece of adhesive in the middle of it and folded the ends in toward the center, so that the ends met in the middle of the adhesive.  Then I put that loop, adhesive side down, on the straight piece of ribbon and secured them together with a mini brad.  I used glue dots to adhere the whole thing to the card base, so the ends of the brad are hidden.

If you are familiar with Stampin’ Up, by now you’ve probably heard that at the end of June 2010, the company is planning to retire many of its current colors of cardstock and ink.  I’ll admit I was pretty stunned at first by the announcement.  I’ll miss some of the colors that are leaving, but I’m also looking forward to seeing the new items.

Remember a few weeks ago I shared the card I made for our elementary school’s retiring music teacher?  Today’s card is the one I made for the PTA Executive Board to give to another retiring teacher, who is a Title 1 reading specialist.  Once again, I used the school’s colors of blue and white, and added some black and red accents.  Stampin’ Up’s Brilliant Blue color is a perfect match to the school’s colors, and it’s one of the retiring colors, so that kind of ties in subtlely to the retiring theme.  For the layout, I used Lizzie Anne Designs Weekly Sketch #124

Feel welcome to let me know what you think of it.  🙂

Hi there!  Today’s card is one my family sent to a longtime friend who is celebrating her birthday today.  I used Lizzie Anne Designs Weekly Sketch #125 for the layout.  I decided to stamp the butterflies on a scrap of the designer paper I used, cut them out, and glue them to the focal point, rather than try to color them.  The butterflies are from Lizzie Anne Designs’ Monthly Mix set for May 2010, and the sentiment is from their April 2010 Monthly Mix set.  The sentiment was stamped off once so the ink would look grey rather than black.  I used Nesties to cut the ovals.

I’m excited to be taking part in the first Lizzie Anne Designs Monthly Mix Blog Hop today!  Check out the Lizzie Anne Designs blog for a list of the other people who are participating.

musical inspiration

May 062010

I’ve mentioned in the past that I make and send cards to the faculty and staff of our elementary school, on behalf of the PTA Executive Board.  This week is Teacher Appreciation Week.  Besides showing the teachers some extra TLC and thanks, it’s also the time that we recognize those who are retiring for all their hard work and dedication over the years.

This year, our music teacher is retiring.  I wanted to incorporate the school’s colors, bright blue and white, into the card for him.  I also wanted to do something with a musical theme.  So I chose two of my musical stamps.  That was easy.  The stamps lended themselves nicely to Lizzie Anne Designs Sketch #122. The blue and white seemed a little stark just by themselves, so I thought black might make those two colors kind of “pop”.  It helped, but it didn’t quite do the trick.  So I decided to try using my Fiskars border punch that reminds me of a fermata (the symbol over the note shown here).  That helped too, but the card still seemed to be lacking something.

And then for some odd reason, my son’s marching band uniform came to mind.

Since our elementary school feeds into our high school, the school colors are similar.  The difference is that the high school also includes black as one of their colors.  So the marching band uniforms are blue, white and black…

with just a tiny touch of red.

TA-DA!  I added a little bit of red matting to the card.  And finally the card satisfied me.

Here’s the card for you to see:

My son probably won’t like this if he sees it, but I can’t resist also including the inspiration:

Last weekend Splitcoaststampers had a Mini Virtual Stamp Night, and I decided that provided a good opportunity to get a start on my Mother’s Day cards.  For this particular challenge the cards needed to have at least one cut out, popped up flower.  I broke out my Jolies Fleurs stamp set and some colors I hadn’t used recently, and put them together using Lizzie Anne Designs Sketch #122

I don’t often use colors this bright, but I think my mother in law will like this card.

I’ll admit it.  I am not very good at coming up with card layouts on my own.  So when there’s a sketch challenge available and I like the sketch, I go ahead and use it.

Today’s card features Lizzie Anne Designs Sketch Challenge #120.  It really was a quick and easy sketch to use.  The time-consuming parts of this card were choosing the color scheme and finding the best cardstock and colored pencil matches to coordinate with the designer paper I picked.  I used my new small scalloped border die from Papertrey Ink to trim the edges of the floral paper.  I used the Banner Birthday stamp set from Lizzie Anne Designs yet again, too.  I really like the sentiments and images in it.

birthday time again

This is the time of year where a lot of people I know have birthdays.  So be prepared to see a lot of birthday cards here in the next month or so!

Today’s card is the one my family will give my niece.  She’s turning 21 this year, so I definitely didn’t want to do anything little girly.  I used Lizzie Anne Designs Sketch Challenge 121 for the layout and some retired SU cardstock, ribbon and designer paper.  The half pearls for the flower centers were a last minute thought but I’m glad I went with them rather than the crystals I had originally planned to use.  (It might be hard to tell, but yes, there’s a tiny half pearl in the center of the flower on the present.)

So very glad...

One of my good friends has been going through some rough times the last few months.  She is a truly caring, warmhearted, kind person, and she’s also a totally amazing crafter.  Unfortunately, she doesn’t always see those qualities lying within herself.  So I made this card for her and gave it to her with a few things to help keep her creative juices flowing.  The sentiment on the card sums up my feelings perfectly – I’m so very glad, and lucky, to have her as a friend.

lad119.jpg

The card uses the Lizzie Anne Designs Sketch Challenge 119 layout.  (Didn’t I say in my last post that I’d probably be using this sketch again? :))  I have to say that I’m pretty dang proud of how well the bow turned out for me.  I totally stink at tying bows, which is why I usually just tie ribbons in a knot.  This one actually turned out looking like a bow for me.  I decided to try using Liquid Pearls for the center of the large flower.

Supplies:
Stamps: Garden Inspirations (Lizzie Anne Designs)
Cardstock: Pumpkin Pie, Basic Gray, Whisper White (SU); “Chutney” from Ambrosia 6″ x 6″ pad (Basic Grey)
Ink: Onyx Black (VersaFine)
Other: Very Vanilla taffeta ribbon, watercolor crayons, blender pens (SU); platinum Liquid Pearls (Ranger)

Today’s card is for a happier occasion than the last card I shared.  One of my friends is having a birthday early next week and this is the card I sent to her.  I hope she has a wonderfully special birthday!

I combined Lizzie Anne Designs Sketch Challenge #119 with some Basic Grey paper and one of my newer Lizzie Anne Designs stamp sets.  The “extra twist” for the challenge was to use an embellishment I’d never used before.  That gave me the incentive to finally use some of the dew drops I’d bought a while ago for the centers of the flowers.

I really like this sketch and I think I’ll be using it again!

When I started making today’s card, I was trying to follow Lizzie Anne Designs Sketch Challenge #116.  I pretty quickly realized that because of the size of the stamps I chose, there was no way I was going to be able to make it a 3.5″ x 5.5″ card as stated in the challenge details.  Then I started having trouble balancing out the smaller rectangle in the sketch, so I ended up just nixing that aspect and using a ribbon with a spiral clip instead.

So, for what it’s worth, here it is.

Today’s card was done for a challenge at Splitcoaststampers a couple of weeks ago.  We were to get inspiration from an online shop, Candy Crate’s Retro Candy Store. I found some bubble gum which immediately made me think of my neglected Best of Cluck stamp set. I decided to borrow my color scheme from the inspiration candy, too.  The layout is, IMO, an “oldie but goodie” – Lizzie Anne Designs Sketch Challenge #81.

As I was working on the card, I had a recipient in mind for it.  The little red chick represents my friend, who doesn’t seem to mind being her own unique person.  Inside the card I’m planning to write something like “to a chick who stands out from the crowd.”  I hope she likes it!

Today I’m sharing the birthday card my husband and I gave our 14-year-old son.  Our son takes after his dad and loves doing all things computer.  (OK, so he takes after his computer-addicted mom a bit too.)  I felt these images from Lizzie Anne Designs were particularly fitting for him.  Once again, I used the LAD weekly sketch #113.

I didn’t want to make a red and pink valentine for my husband – that’s just not his thing. I just received an order from Lizzie Anne Designs Friday and wanted to use some of my new things. I totally adore this tree image, and thought this designer paper would go well with it.

It wasn’t until after I’d finished the card and came online that I realized I’d used colors for last week’s SCS color challenge. Even though I’d peeked at the color challenge earlier in the week, I didn’t make this card with those colors specifically in mind.  The layout is Lizzie Anne Designs sketch challenge #113.

Hello!  It’s snowing here today, so I hope that will give me a chance to get some more cards made to share with y’all soon.

Today’s card was sent to a friend who gave birth to a little girl in December.  I used Lizzie Anne Designs Sketch Challenge #109 for the layout.  My friend’s baby has a lot of hair, so I was tempted to add some to the stamped image, but I was afraid I’d mess it up if I tried that.  LOL

Congratulations and all the best to my friend and her family!
