Here’s what I came up with (just under the wire, eek!) for the July Sketch For You To Try.  It’s another Halloween card for Operation Write Home.  I tried to take some of the seriousness out of the sentiment by pairing it with the cute cat from Lawn Fawn.  The color scheme comes from this week’s Dynamic Duos challenge.  The espresso colored panel is embossed with an embossing folder that I chose because it made me think of the wind swirling around on a spooky night; sadly, it doesn’t show in the photo very well. Sigh. Anyway, here’s the card:

Sorry this post is kind of short and maybe not quite coherent… I have the TV paused (thanks to the DVR) so I can post this before heading back to watch the Olympic women’s gymnastic finals.  🙂  Go Team USA!

Supplies:
Stamps: Critters in the ‘Burbs, Hats Off to You (Lawn Fawn); Looks Like Spring (SU); Sweet & Spooky (Lizzie Anne Designs)
Cardstock: Kraft, Early Espresso (SU); Pure Luxury Ivory (Gina K. Designs)
Ink: Crumb Cake, Early Espresso (SU); Tuxedo Black (Memento)
Other: markers (Copic); Crumb Cake seam binding, dimensionals and black brads (SU); D’Vine Swirls embossing folder (ProvoCraft); standard circle Nestabilities die (Spellbinders)

Happy Friday to you! It’s time for another Sweet ‘n Sassy Digi Challenge!

This week’s theme is Flag, You’re It!.  I’ve made a fall-themed card featuring the adorable Cocoa Mouse.   I printed out the image three times.  I added a couple rows of hand stitching to the one I planned to use as my focal panel.  I used my favorite watercoloring technique to color the leaf on one of the other two images, and Copics to color Cocoa’s head and paw on the other, and then fussy cut those parts.  (I did color and attempt to cut out Cocoa’s tail, but that proved to be TOO fussy.) Cocoa’s tail and the stem of the leaf were colored on the focal panel.  When I printed the images, I also printed the sentiment, which I created myself in Microsoft Word.  Sweet ‘n Sassy’s banner die was used to cut it to the banner shape, and I attached it to a narrow strip of cardstock to create a flag.  I’m imagining that Cocoa’s other paw is holding it, but you can’t see that because it’s hidden behind the leaf.  🙂  Finally I attached the leaf to the panel, and then used dimensional adhesive to put Cocoa’s head in place.  Then I assembled the card following this week’s Splitcoaststampers.com sketch challenge for the layout.

The rest of the design team and I hope you’ll join us this week! Simply create a card, using a digital image for the focal point, and add in a flag or a banner of some sort. Link your card at the Sweet ‘n Sassy Digi Challenge site. Sweet ‘n Sassy Stamps digital images aren’t required, but we do love when you use those (and you get the chance for perks if you do – see the Digi Challenge site for more details!). Be sure to “like” the Sweet ‘n Sassy Digi Challenge Facebook page, too!

Thanks for stopping by today!

It’s been a busy week, but I did manage to put together this card pretty quickly for the Dynamic Duos color challenge that ends today.  I will confess that it’s a CASE of a card I made last fall, but I’ve changed up the colors a bit.  I incorporated the Dynamic Duos dessert option of using punches by rounding the corners of the card. The designer paper was a strip that I’d cut doing a different project. The edge of the whole sheet of paper was colored as if it had been sponged, so I added some sponging to the other edge of my strip to even out the look before I pleated it. In retrospect I should have put either a red or black strip of cardstock (or maybe even both colors) behind the pleated paper strip, to make it stand out more from the card base.  But oh well… I still think it’s a cute card, if I say so myself.  😉

Supplies:
Stamps: My Silly Valentine (Lawn Fawn)
Cardstock: Kraft, Poppy Parade, Basic Black, Very Vanilla (Stampin’ Up)
Ink: Tuxedo Black (Memento); Crumb Cake (SU)
Other: standard circle and petite scalloped circle Nestabilities dies (Spellbinders); corner rounder punch (SU); scoring board (Martha Stewart Crafts); Premier colored pencils (Prismacolor); odorless mineral spirits (Houston Arts); sponge

The current Lawnscaping challenge is to create a project deriving inspiration from a photo montage they provided.  Normally I shy away from inspiration challenges. I think I get overwhelmed trying to figure out what part of the photo to use as my starting off point.  But this one came to me pretty easily.

If you look closely in the inspiration piece, just above the big yellow cake there’s an image with a pennant banner.  So I decided to use a banner stamp to create a birthday card for one of my friends.  One nice thing about the Lawn Fawn photopolymer stamps is that you can gently shape them as you position them onto your acrylic block; I did that here to give the banner a curve shape.  I made sure to stamp enough pennants so I could add one letter of “happy birthday” to each pennant.  My friend has pets, so I added a cat and a dog wearing party hats.  The birds were a bit of an afterthought.  I’d accidentally inked up too much of the banner stamp when I was stamping the pennants for “day”, and part of another pennant stamped next to it.  It looked messy.  So I added one bird to cover that up, LOL, and then decided I should include a second bird to hang the “happy” banner.  I took my color scheme from the inspiration photos.

I think the yellow banners match the card base better in real life, but overall, I’m pleased with how the card turned out.  I hope it brings a smile to my friend’s face and that she has a wonderful birthday!

Supplies:
Stamps: Bannerific, Critters in the ‘Burbs, Hats Off to You, Jessie’s ABCs (Lawn Fawn)
Cardstock: Barely Banana, Groovy Guava (Stampin’ Up); Basics White (Papertrey Ink)
Ink: Tuxedo Black (Memento)
Other: markers (Copic)

OWH Sketch 130!

Comments Off on OWH Sketch 130!
Jul 222012

I’m honored and excited to be this week’s sample maker for the Operation Write Home Stars and Stamps Sketch Challenge!  The sketch this week has some fun and interesting curves in it.

I’ve made two sample cards.  The first one follows the sketch really closely, and is pretty “clean and simple” in design.  I feel this card is pretty much age and gender neutral, which is something I like to do often for my OWH cards since I never know who is going to be sending or receiving them.  This one could work for any season of the year, too, even though the colors remind me of Halloween.  The orange is a digital image; I’ve used it twice in a small size on the left side of the card, and used a larger version of its mirror image as the main focal point. (I used the mirror image so the big orange wouldn’t be “looking off the edge” of the card. I’m particular about orientation like that!)  I printed all three of the oranges on designer paper and cut them out and adhered them to the card.  The black scalloped border is made from three circles cut with Nestabilities dies, laid out close together, and trimmed at the top, bottom, and folded edge of the card.

The next card takes things up a notch.  I turned the sketch on its side and created a scene with it.  The flowers, leaves and butterfly were all stamped on white cardstock, watercolored to get that varied color effect, fussy cut, and then adhered to the card.  The butterfly’s body is attached directly to the card, and I folded up the wings and adhered them with dimensional adhesive, to give a 3-D effect.  The grassy border was simply made by cutting into the cardstock with my Cutterbee scissors, placing the cuts very close to each other.

And here is the sketch… that might be useful, yes?

So now it’s your turn!  I’d love to see what you can make with this sketch.  Be sure to link your creations on the OWH Stars and Stamps blog.  Thanks for stopping by today!

It’s Christmas in July with the Sweet ‘n Sassy Digi Challenge this week, and we are celebrating with the new release of FIVE new digital images as well as a digital sentiment set!  Ho, ho, ho!!!  🙂

We’d love to have you play along with us!  Just create a Christmas card using a digital image, and link it to the Digi Challenge blog.  Although we’d really love to see what you can create with Sweet ‘n Sassy digital images, you’re welcome to use digis from other companies.  Details about linking your card and the perks for which you’ll become eligible are all listed on the Digi Challenge blog.

The Digi Challenge design team has put together a blog hop for you to enjoy.  All our creations use at least one of the new digital images.  I’ve chosen the Poinsettia image and paired it with one of the sayings from Christmas Sentiments.  I printed the poinsettia image a total of four times – two times each in two different sizes.  (That’s one of the things I especially like about working with digis – being able to resize them to fit the space on the card.)  For each size, I colored the leaves on one image and the petals on the other, cut them out, and reassembled them to give the flowers some dimension.  I also added a few tiny half pearls for the flowers’ centers.  Since this card is going to be included in the box I’m preparing for Operation Write Home’s Early Bird card drive, I was careful not to make it too thick and lumpy.  (I’m a week late on the OWH Midweek Throwdown Christmas in July challenge, but oh well.)  The layout is Freshly Made Sketch #44.

Here’s the blog hop order.  Be sure to comment on all of the blogs.  One of the team members is a mystery blogger (even she doesn’t know who she is yet!), and one person who comments on her blog will be chosen to win the entire new digital release!  How totally awesome is that?!? The winner will be announced on the Sweet ‘n Sassy Digi Challenge blog next Friday, July 27.

One last thing. Have you checked out the new Sweet ‘N Sassy Stamps Digi Challenge Facebook page? We will give away three digital stamps (3 winners, each gets 1 free digi of their choice) when we get to 100 LIKES! Go see what it’s all about! 🙂

Supplies for today’s card:
Digital Images: Poinsettia, Christmas Sentiments (Sweet ‘n Sassy Stamps)
Cardstock: Real Red, Wild Wasabi, Confetti Cream (Stampin’ Up)
Ink: printer ink
Other: markers (Copic); half pearls (KaiserCraft); dimensionals (SU)

Sweet ‘n Sassy Stamps is having a Christmas in July blog hop – and their customers are invited to participate, too!  They’re celebrating big time with a special offer on their Christmas themed clear stamps, and they are even pre-releasing some new Christmas sets!  Check out the Sweet ‘n Sassy blog for all the details on this limited time offer.

Here’s what I created for this event.  I’ve used the digital image Rhubarb Santa with this week’s Sweet Stop sketch challenge layout.  Because I’m going to send this card to Operation Write Home, I wanted to keep it easy to mail, but I did add a little bit of dimension and texture by using Liquid Applique for the fluffy trim on Rhubarb’s hat.

Stay tuned for Friday’s post… the Sweet ‘n Sassy Digi Challenge Design Team is joining in the fun with a blog hop to celebrate the new release of several Christmas digital images!  You won’t want to miss it!

Supplies:
Digital Image: Rhubarb Santa (Sweet ‘n Sassy Stamps)
Cardstock: Real Red (Stampin’ Up); Pure Luxury Ivory (Gina K. Designs); designer papers from Holly Jolly Christmas 6″ x 6″ paper pad (Echo Park)
Ink: printer ink
Other: markers (Copic); Liquid Applique (Marvy); standard circle and petite scalloped circle Nestabilities dies (Spellbinders)

I have to admit, I was having a hard time figuring out ideas for this week’s Dynamic Duos color combination.  I didn’t want to give up on it because I’ve participated in all the other Dynamic Duos challenges so far.  Finally I came up with this quick CAS card.  The cupcake is actually a muffin from a breakfast-themed stamp set! The dew drops were an afterthought, but the card looked too plain without them.  I had a really hard time getting pinks to match for this one but I suppose it all looks OK put together.  At any rate, I think this card will work for one of our military heroes to send home to his or her family.

Supplies:
Stamps: Love ‘n Breakfast, Jessie’s ABCs (Lawn Fawn)
Cardstock: Pink Pirouette, Baja Breeze (Stampin’ Up); Solar White (Neenah)
Ink: Tuxedo Black (Memento)
Other: Pink Pirouette ribbon (SU); dew drops (Robin’s Nest); markers (Copic); corner rounder punch (EK Success)

Korin, the owner of Sweet ‘n Sassy Stamps, surprised everyone Friday morning by making a new digital image available in the Sweet ‘n Sassy Stamps store!  As soon as I saw it, I knew I couldn’t wait to make a card with it.  Luckily I had some time to work on cards, and I came up with this:

This is Kiwi Koala.  Is he just simply adorable, or what?!?  He’s available both colored and as a black and white image.  I chose to use the pre-colored version, and then picked my cardstock colors to coordinate with it.  The layout is from one of the release party challenges that SNSS had for their newly released clear stamps earlier this week.

The “official” new digital image release at SNSS will take place next Friday, July 20.  Stay tuned for it!  🙂

Supplies for today’s card:
Digital Image: Kiwi Koala’s Watermelon colored image (Sweet ‘n Sassy Stamps)
Stamp: Stipple Plaid (Stampin’ Up)
Cardstock: Riding Hood Red, Bashful Blue, Green Galore (SU); Pure Luxury White (Gina K. Designs)
Ink: printer ink; Bashful Blue (SU)
Other: Scallop dies (SNSS); corner rounder punch (EK Success); dew drops (Robin’s Nest)

Hello! It’s time for this week’s Sweet ‘n Sassy Digi Challenge! This week’s theme is Fun Folds. To play along, create a card using a digital image and any card fold other than the standard “piece of cardstock folded in half”, and link it at the Sweet ‘n Sassy Digi Challenge site. Even though you can use a digi image from any company, we especially enjoy seeing what our challenge participants create using Sweet ‘n Sassy digital images! More details about the perks you can get for participating are available on the Sweet ‘n Sassy Digi Challenge site.

I’ve created a flap card for this challenge.  I cut the card base to 5.5″ x 11″ and scored it at 4.25″ and at 8.5″, and folded the two end pieces toward the middle.  I chose to trim the small flap down so it would be half the size of the card front, but that isn’t a necessary step.  I rounded the corners of the flap and added a strip of designer paper.  The Rhubarb image was printed onto white cardstock, cut into the oval shape and colored, and matted with the scalloped oval.  I attached the oval to the card front, being careful to only use adhesive on the flap part.  Then I attached a pair of super thin magnets to the flap and to the card so that the card would close.

This photo shows the card with the front flap opened… the round silvery things are the magnets.

I should make more of these flap cards than I do.  They provide a lot of writing space inside, making them ideal for donating to Operation Write Home.

So get your digi image ready and create a card with a non-standard fold, and share it with us at Sweet ‘n Sassy Digi Challenges!  The rest of the design team and I would love to see what you create!  🙂

Supplies for today’s card:
Digital Image: Rhubarb’s Autumn Day (Sweet ‘n Sassy Stamps)
Cardstock: More Mustard, Autumn Vine designer papers (Stampin’ Up); Solar White (Neenah)
Ink: printer ink
Other: markers (Copic); petite oval and petite scalloped oval Nestabilities dies (Spellbinders); corner rounder punch (SU); magnets (Basic Grey)

Good morning!  Just a quick post today to share a quick, CAS one-layer card I made a few days ago.  I doodled the border around the edge, stamped Rhubarb the bear (is his bee suit adorable or what?!?) and the sentiment, and colored the image using the Magic Colored Pencil technique. The wings were colored with a gold metallic pencil, so they do have a bit of shimmer to them, but it was hard to pick that up with the camera.

Supplies:
Stamps: Bee Happy Rhubarb (Sweet ‘n Sassy Stamps)
Cardstock: Kraft (Stampin’ Up)
Ink: Tuxedo Black (Memento)
Other: Premier colored pencils (Prismacolor); odorless mineral spirits (Houston Arts); corner rounder punch (EK Success); multiliner pen (Copic)

Hello!  Today I’ve combined this week’s Dynamic Duos color challenge with Freshly Made Sketch #42.  I used the mirror image of the sketch so the flower image wouldn’t be “looking off the edge” of the card.  Yeah, I’m weird like that!  LOL  I decided not to put a sentiment on this one so it can be a real “any occasion” card.  The kind of sketchy look in the flower petals wasn’t really intentional (they should be more solidly filled) but I like it.  I achieved that by first stamping the image first on my Stamp-a-ma-jig imaging sheet.  Then I spritzed a bit of water into the air and held the stamp, inky rubber side up, underneath the mist to remoisten the ink a bit.  Then I stamped that onto the cardstock.

Thanks for stopping by today!

All supplies for this card are from Stampin’ Up unless otherwise noted.
Stamp: A Real Sierra Primrose (Hero Arts)
Cardstock: Old Olive, Rich Razzleberry, Very Vanilla, Razzleberry Lemonade designer paper
Ink: Old Olive, Rich Razzleberry
Other: Swiss Dots embossing folder (ProvoCraft)

Hello!  This week’s Sweet ‘n Sassy Digi Challenge is all about the beach!  If you’d like to join in, just create a project using a digital image of the beach or sand as your focal point, and link it to the Sweet ‘n Sassy Digi Challenge blog.  The rest of the design team and I would love to see what you make!

My card this week is pretty simple.  I actually made it about a week ago, thinking it would be kind of a test run of coloring this image, and that I’d make a “real” card for the challenge this week.  But after our power outage, my brain just felt scrambled and I couldn’t get back in my creative groove, so this card had to do.  For the blue panel, I ran the cardstock through my crimper, then turned the cardstock 90° and ran it through again, which loosened the fibers of the paper so I was able to gently pull it apart and get a nice soft texture on the “inside” side.  That’s the side I have facing up on the card.

Remember to “like” the Sweet ‘n Sassy Digi Challenge Facebook page if you haven’t yet!  Once it reaches 100 likes, three people will each win their choice of a digital image from the Sweet ‘n Sassy Stamps store!

Supplies for today’s card:

Other: red grosgrain ribbon (SU); markers (Copic); standard circle Nestabilities die (Spellbinders); crimper (Fiskars)

Hi there!  I hope all my American readers had a wonderful time celebrating Independence Day.  My family was glad to have a mostly relaxing day at home, considering last weekend’s chaos.  We had a fierce windstorm go through last Friday night and we were without electricity for 60 hours.  We were lucky enough to procure a generator so we could hook up our refrigerator and some fans, and our property didn’t receive any damage, so we feel pretty fortunate.

My creativeness took a mini vacation during all of that, but now I’m trying to get back on track again.  I realized last night as I was trying to fall asleep that I had forgotten to check out this week’s Dynamic Duos color challenge.  So this morning I got working on that.  This time the color combo is Crumb Cake and the participants’ choice of another color.  Well, my “Crumb Cake” cardstock is old enough that Stampin’ Up was still calling it Kraft when I purchased it. LOL I had some already-colored butterflies left over from the last Sweet ‘n Sassy digital new release week, so I decided to use them and paired Pacific Point with the kraft cardstock.  It might be hard to tell in the photo, but the butterflies were printed on shimmery white cardstock so they do have a bit of shimmer to them. I kept the layout clean and simple, but used an embossing folder to give the kraft layer some visual interest.

So, that’s what I have for you today.  Thanks for stopping by!
